Winona Ryder is the professionally-known name of Winona Laura Hoowitz who was born in Winona Minnesota. The parents named her Winona for her hometown. Both her father Michel Horowitz, and mother Cynthia Palmer are authors and editors. Ryder's father is from a Jewish family Ryder believes she is Jewish. She has two younger half-siblings, Jubal and Sunyata. Ryder's family relocated to Mendocino County to California, when she was just 7 years old. There was no electricity. Ryder read a lot due to the absence of television. Ryder began taking acting lessons at the American Conservatory Theatre in 1983, when she was 12 years old.
